How Much Water To Drink A Day To Lose Weight?

For some reason I get this question a lot.

I don’t know why people are so concerned about how much water to drink a day to lose weight.

I actually get this more than how many carbs per day to lose weight or how many calories per day to lose weight, which is quite funny in my opinion.

When it comes to losing weight and how much water you should drink, it really comes down to your surroundings and you diet.

For example, if you eat a lot of sodium throughout the day, then you are going to need to drink more water to flush out your system. Sodium holds water. Enough said.

Another variable is if you are carbing up as I explain in my cheat meal article. Carbohydrates hold water, that’s why you boil pasta in water, oatmeal in water etc…

The same holds true inside your body and your muscular system. When you eat carbohydrates, your body will break them down and store them as muscle glycogen. When this happens, muscle glycogen will soak up water and hold on to it. That’s why if you ever did one of those really low carb diets like Atkins, the first couple days you were urinating like crazy even though you weren’t drinking that much.

That’s because your body was using precious muscle glyocgen for fuel, therefore all that excess water was being released.

Now if you were having a cheat meal and your glycogen stores were low, you would instinctively drink more water so those carbohydrates could be properly processed. When I have my cheat meal, usually on Saturdays, I always drink a ton of water afterwards without even thinking about it. I get thirsty quite easily and my mouth becomes dry. This is because my body needs that extra water for all the carbohydrates I just ingested.

The other variable is your envirnonment. If you live in a hot climate, of course you are going to need to drink more water because you sweat more. I remember when I worked for the Town and Recreation department when I was younger, I’d go through a gallon in 8 hours without even thinking about it.

Essentially, a good rule to live by is just keep drinking until your urine is clear and you go to the bathroom multiple times per day. This ensures your body is properly hydrated and your drinking enough water to help with weight loss and your body’s normal everyday functions.

Oh, and don’t believe that 8 glasses a day crap. There’s no scientific data to accurately back that up because everyone is different.

So Cute
