Avoid These Exercises For Your Stomach Workouts

Stomach workouts can be really dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. They are dangerous because a lot of people think that they can get a flat stomach by just doing a lot of crunches and sit ups every day. I hear how people are doing a thousand sit-ups a day.

That’s crazy because it’s so bad for your lower back. Your lower back vertebrae were never meant to bend that much in a flexed position over and over again. Over time, this is the cause for disc herniations and bad, chronic lower back pain. It all could be avoided if people just avoided crunches and sit ups, but sadly the media keeps spewing this advice like it’s the end all, be all of getting a six pack.

Now what most people don’t know is that your abdominal region is like an onion and each layer there are different types of muscles. For example, the “Six Pack” is called the recuts abdominus and it’s the outermost layer of the abdominal wall. The function of this muscle is flexion. That’s it.

It’s not going to give you a smaller waist. That’s why you should not spend the majority of your time doing crunches or sit ups. Without getting too technical, the deepest layer, I feel is the most important when it comes to stomach workouts and you getting a flat tummy.

The deepest abdominal muscle is called the transverse abdominus. Its main responsibility is stability throughout your core and to protect the lower back. It also acts like a girdle women used back in the old days to suck in their stomach. It tightens up your belly and keeps everything nice and firm. This is probably the most important abdominal muscle for getting a flat stomach.

The only exercises that really hits the transverse abdominus are variations of the plank. There is no need for me to go into great detail about these exercises because I have written a separate article on it. You can check it out here, titled exercises for flat stomach.

Do those exact stomach workouts I outlined in the above article and enjoy your new flat stomach.
