The Twinkie Diet

By Jared DiCarmine On November 15, 2010 Under Diet Reviews

So I was out this weekend hanging with some good ole high school buddies and one of them asked if I had seen this thing on t.v. about the so called The Twinkie Diet ? The first thing that came out of my mouth was “WTF is that?” Except in a funny, joking manner. I have just seen so much dieting crap out there that whenever I hear about something like the Twinkie Diet , I am automatically on the defensive.

Anyways, my buddy explained how this professor lost something like 20 pounds of fat by eating 4 twinkies a day and some protein
shakes. I immediately said that it was probably some stupid fad or joke or one of those annoying viral emails that we get from time to time in our in boxes.

So what happened was I was online last night and all I kept seeing everywhere were stories about this Twinkie Diet . And then a client brought it to my attention. This led me to dig deeper and investigate into this Twinkie matter.

As it turns out, there is an actual person who did this and lost 27 pounds. He consumed this crap for 2 months along with some protein shakes and greens supplements. He only allowed himself 1800 calories  a day. His name is Mark Haub and he is a professor of nutrition at Kansas State University. Basically what Haub was doing was testing the premise that calorie counting is the key to fat loss.

This is a a no brainer. I mean, eat less calories and you will lose belly fat. It’s plain and simple.

Now I do not know Professor Haub at all. I do not know what his teachings or beliefs are when it comes to nutrition and fat loss, but if he is one of those professors who still teaches a lot of out dated material like I have seen in the past, then I can see this point that he was trying to make. That to lose weight, all you have to do is lower the amount of calories that you burn off on any given day.

But here is the problem with this thinking and his LOOSELY controlled study.

This DOES NOT teach the subject ANYTHING about healthy eating and healthy eating habits!

Also, it is widely publicized that when you lower your calories for a significant amount of time, your metabolism will decrease as well. This is when many people over diet, lose muscle mass, and become depressed. So when they come off the diet, their metabolisms are in the gutter and they begin putting the weight back on. Then they become depressed, eat more and repeat the cycle all over again!

Maybe this is you, I am not sure, but this phenomena of lowering calories constantly to lose weight is seen too often.

But guess what you don’t have to do this for a long time. But we will get to that in a second.

Now, the nature of human beings is take the easy way out. All this Twinkie Diet is going to do is make people think, “oh gee, I can eat crap and still lose weight. Awesome!”

Yes, I guess you can. But I guarantee that you will put that weight back on. You will not learn anything about to how to properly control your portions, how to cook amazing tasty dinners, and how to live a healthier life. I mean, who would want to diet anyway by eating Twinkies?

The real reason to lose belly fat is get healthier, to live a better quality of life and to hopefully live longer without any preventable diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

I am sorry, but I cannot agree with this way of thinking. Professor Haub’s stunt, I feel will give many people the idea that it is okay to eat CANCER CAUSING foods to lose weight and in the present, they might very well lose some weight.

But remember, a calorie is not a calorie.

I’ll just stick to my boring stir fry with lean steak each night ;)

They can stay with their cancer in a wrapper.

You obviously didn’t get it. Fat loss is really only a matter of calories.
Statement “calories aren’t calories” is false, because calorie is measurement unit. So it always are calories, no matter what.
Your argument about health is really funny, because Mr. Haubs’s health improved over the few past weeks. He got his blood tested. You should try that sometimes too.
I would recommend you going through some research papers, because you are the one who teaches outdated advice.
    Have a nice day.

Thank you for your response. However, maybe I did not do a good enough job of making myself clearer. Yes, if you take in less calories than you burn you will lose weight. And weight loss is not always a matter of just calories. But you do not need to feed your body junk food to accomplish this. This experiment that Professor Haub has done might lead some people to believe that they can do the same thing and still be healthy. Also, his blood test results are correlated with short term weight loss. Who knows what they would look like in the long term if this type of eating is kept up. Take care.
